General overview
One of the definitive techniques for treating and preventing the signs of facial aging is botulinum toxin, popularly known as Botox. This non-surgical treatment has been used for years for the treatment of facial wrinkles and to prevent them from appearing.
Botulinum toxin is a substance applied with the aim of partially weakening some of the facial muscles whose excessive contraction causes wrinkles to form. Before undergoing treatment with toxin it is essential to be aware that wrinkles already etched into the skin at rest can achieve striking improvements with its application, but in certain cases that improvement does not mean they disappear completely.
Injection techniques and scientific knowledge about this product have evolved considerably in recent years, making it possible to achieve spectacular results without altering the natural look of the face, and considerably increasing the safety of its use.

Which types of wrinkles can be treated with botulinum toxin?
The wrinkles that can be treated with botulinum toxin are mainly:
- Wrinkles on the forehead
- Wrinkles between the eyebrows
- Wrinkles at the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
To treat wrinkles or folds in other parts of the face, such as under-eye hollows, the nasolabial fold, marionette lines, smoker’s lines or the cheekbones, it is necessary to use hyaluronic acid.
Botulinum toxin can also be used to define the facial oval, slim the face and, at the same time, treat bruxism, by inducing relaxation and partial atrophy of the masseter muscle. Another very useful and effective indication for which the toxin can be used is the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, in any area of the body.
How long does the effect of botulinum toxin last?
The effect of botulinum toxin can last between 3 and 6 months, with the most usual duration being between 4 and 5 months. This variability depends mainly on the patient’s own characteristics and on the area treated, since the different types of toxin have not been shown to have different durations.
As muscle contraction regains its intensity around the fourth or fifth month, expression lines gradually reappear. However, because of the prolonged period of partial muscle immobilization, the wrinkles do not return with their previous intensity. Moreover, if treatment with botulinum toxin is maintained continuously before the muscles fully reactivate, the improvement in wrinkles continues to progress after each treatment. This is because weakening the movements that etch the folds into the skin causes the deepest wrinkles to gradually fade.
What types of botulinum toxin are there?
Although botulinum toxin is commonly known as Botox, this is actually the name of one of the commercial brands that offer the product. In fact, the same company offers its botulinum toxin in two formats, one called Vistabel® and the other Botox®. However, there is no difference between the two products other than the amount of toxin they contain. The other brands on the market offering botulinum toxin are Dysport® or Azzalure®, and Xeomin®. Dysport® and Azzalure®, like Botox® and Vistabel®, are the same product.
The differences between the Dysport® range and the Botox® range are minimal, since both are type A botulinum toxin bound to a protein. Xeomin® is the only option composed exclusively of type A botulinum toxin, without being bound to any protein. The main advantage of having different types of toxin available is that, if a patient develops tolerance to one of the commercial forms and the product loses its effectiveness, another type of toxin can be used to continue applying its rejuvenating effect.
