General overview
Forehead reduction, also known as hairline lowering surgery, is a procedure that reduces the size of the forehead by bringing the hairline forward, reducing the temporal recessions and improving the overall appearance of the upper third of the face.
Although this surgery is performed mainly on women, it can also be carried out on men in selected cases. The main concern our patients report when deciding to undergo this procedure is the self-consciousness caused by an excessively wide forehead, a feature they usually try to disguise by covering it with bangs.
Forehead reduction is a procedure with a very low complication rate that produces immediate results. To maximize the safety of the procedure, it is performed under general anesthesia as day surgery, since it is very short (usually around an hour). Postoperative pain is mild and is usually easy to control with oral painkillers.
The forehead skin is removed through an incision made so that it is concealed at the edge of the hairline, so over time this scar becomes practically imperceptible. The sutures are removed one week after the procedure, and patients can return to their usual social and working routine about a week after the forehead reduction.
Postoperative care after forehead reduction is very simple and comfortable for the patient. Initially, we keep a compressive dressing in place until the first follow-up appointment. Once it is removed, the wounds can be cleaned as normal (with soap and water, drying afterwards and applying a local antiseptic). Once the stitches are out, it is crucial to use moisturizer and sun protection on the scar area for at least a year to optimize the resulting scar.
In addition to the benefit of reducing the size of the forehead and the temporal recessions, this surgery also improves cases with laxity of the forehead skin or very marked forehead wrinkles, and gives a subtle lift to the position of the eyebrows. However, it does not replace botulinum toxin as the optimal treatment for forehead wrinkles.
