General Overview

Collagen induction therapy using the “microneedling” technique, also popularly known as “dermapen” (after the trade name of one of the devices used to apply it), is a skin rejuvenation therapy that has been gaining a great deal of popularity in recent years. The “vampire lift” is a variant of this technique that has become well known through its use by public figures and bloggers, in which platelet-rich plasma obtained from the patient’s own blood is used.

The microneedling technique is recommended to improve the following conditions:

  • Treatment of fine wrinkles.
  • Improvement of skin quality, optimizing the consistency, elasticity and radiance of the skin.
  • Treatment of scars, including scars resulting from acne.
  • Treatment of stretch marks.
  • Treatment of superficial skin spots.

Mechanism of action

The procedure consists of applying multiple micro-punctures to the skin, using a device that allows extremely precise control of the depth reached by the treatment. The benefits this technique brings to skin quality are explained by the following physiological mechanisms:

  • Each of the microscopic punctures made in the dermis induces collagen proliferation to fill the space it creates. This process is the body’s natural way of reacting to any skin injury, generating new collagen molecules. However, by precisely selecting the depth at which this stimulus is applied, the process can be optimized to obtain greater collagen synthesis in the appropriate areas. Clinically, this process translates into an improvement in skin consistency, providing more smoothness, radiance, and improving the finest wrinkles by increasing the thickness and density of the collagen layer of the dermis.
  • During the treatment, the access to the dermis created by the micro-perforations allows skincare products to penetrate better and therefore be more effective. The products usually used are hyaluronic acid, various vitamins and metabolic precursors, or platelet-rich plasma. Creams traditionally applied to intact skin have the limitation that they must cross the epidermal barrier for the products applied to reach the intermediate and deep layers of the dermis, on which they are intended to act. The microneedling or “dermapen” technique allows these products direct access to their area of action.

About the procedure

The treatment begins with the application of a topical anesthetic ointment, which must be left on for at least 25 minutes so that the treatment can be carried out properly and be painless. Regional blocks with local anesthetic can also be performed to optimize discomfort control. The procedure then begins, carried out under sterile conditions. As the device is glided over the skin, the selected product is applied continuously to ensure it penetrates.

To obtain the best possible results from this treatment, it is advisable to have at least 3 to 4 sessions, spaced at least 1 month apart. After the procedure, it is essential to continue protecting the skin from solar radiation with sunscreen.
